The situation arose when the gaming platform sent out promotional material for the game The End of the Sun, which inadvertently featured the double-S symbol associated with the Nazi Schutzstaffel (SS). This incident has raised significant concerns about the company's oversight and the implications of using such imagery.

According to The Verge, GOG attributed the inclusion of the controversial symbols to a "series of mistakes," which involved miscommunication with their German quality assurance team and issues related to font rendering. The company also noted that during a recent bank holiday, staffing shortages contributed to the error. In a follow-up statement, a GOG representative acknowledged the unfortunate association the symbols could create and clarified that the material was withheld from the German community out of respect for local sensitivities.
