In a significant security lapse, nearly one million passports and photo IDs were discovered unprotected on the public internet, raising urgent concerns about data privacy and security. This incident highlights the vulnerabilities present in digital storage systems, especially those handling sensitive personal information.

According to The Verge, security researcher Sammy Azdoufal uncovered over 985,000 identity documents stored in publicly accessible URLs, lacking any form of password protection or access control. The data included not just passports and driver’s licenses but also personal details of individuals who had visited cannabis clubs in Spain, with no adequate safeguards in place from the responsible software provider, Cannabis Club Systems.
